Baker, one of the Founders of Untemplater, joined us today for the launch of his new guide – Unautomate Your Finances. In our interview, Baker talks about the philosophy behind Unautomating finances, how he was able to travel the world with his wife and daughter, why he’s against credit cards, and his quest and success with making money online.
If you’re battling debt, want to monetize what you’re passionate about, or want to leave it all behind to travel the world for a year with your family, then Baker is the guy you need to talk to.
Here’s a summary of our interview:
Tell us about the ebook that launches today
The ebook is called Unautomate Your Finances and it is about Adam Baker’s real-life experience with paying off debt, managing finances, and creating a conscious system that allows you to enjoy your life and keep your finances healthy at the same time.
People always say, “I could do this if I had the money.” So finally Adam and Courtney decided to do something about it and turn their financial life around. That is what the ebook is all about.
Why “Unautomate” when everything online right now is about automating?
When you automate, you trade fragments of consciousness for convenience. You’re pretty much saying, “I don’t want to know what’s going on, I just want the benefit.” At the same time, we tend to automate too much in our life and try to bury our problems away from our consciousness.
Automation is not a solution, it’s only a magnifier that amplifies your current habits. If your habits are bad, then it’s going to amplify the bad habits that you have with your finances.
Unautomation is trading convenience back for consciousness.
How were you able to sell everything, travel the world, and live the “mobile lifestyle” with a family?
First things is first, you need to have 100% support from your spouse or partner.
Adam and Courtney didn’t want having a child to hold them back from pursuing their dreams and life goals. They understand the responsibilities and sacrifices of having Miligan and love her unconditionally, and wanted to figure out a way to make Miligan a part of the experience rather than a “burden” that makes Adam and Courtney give up their dreams because they now have “grown up” responsibilities.
The journey came from the support of people online, a lot of conscious decision making, and a lot of trial and error.
What advice can you give people who don’t have the income generation to pay off their loans in an effective manner?
There are many reasons why someone does not currently have a high income. Perhaps she’s working on something that she truly loves, but unfortunately what she loves to do does not have a high income potential. This is very different to someone who is not focusing and spreading herself thin.
Adam’s suggestion would be to find ways to increase your income generation. You either have to spend less than you earn, or earn more than you spend. You need to explore the income side of the equation and really ask the question, “Why are you not making the money that you need to be making?”
A lot of young people find ways to distract ourselves and dilute our focus away from the business model.

On the blogging for money topic, is it just me, or do other’s feel totally UN-PASSIONATE of trying to make money from advertising and affiliates? Trying to write for the sake of making money takes the entire fun away from blogging.
What do you guys think?

The interview really piqued my curiosity. I had never read Baker’s site before because my wife and I don’t have a problem with debt but I found his personal story really fascinating and now I will have to take a look at his work. Thanks for the information.

This was a great interview! Recently I’ve been thinking about what I want to do over the summer, and it’s easy to come up with excuses… not enough money, no time, etc. However, deep down, I know these can all be over-come. I need to sit down with my wife, discuss what we want to do, come up with ways to do it, and get to work!
