It’s funny because I’ve met experienced business owners who will admit that they still don’t know everything. This shows that there’s no point for a 20-something to try to learn everything off the bat. Information overload sucks and I’m guilty of it.

Man that’s genius. One of my friends was recently boasting about how he applied for a supervisor job and spent most of the interview discussing his past as a business owner. He never got the job.

I appreciate the kind words. I like your idea of outsourcing to friends and family. I’ve tried to do this but the problem I encountered is that my circle of friends didn’t take the tasks too seriously. Maybe it’s just me but there seems to be a greater sense of urgency when someone is working for a complete stranger for good money.

Avoiding Information overload is very important. If you spend time trying to learn everything there is to know, you may never actually get to the point where you start the business because you keep thinking that there is this or that you must have in place before you can start. Just jump in and get your feet wet and learn as you go.

“Never be the CEO”

This is also good advice if you decide to transition from being an entrepreneur to having a “real” job. One piece of resume advice is never list a job title higher than the one you are applying for. So unless you are applying for a c-level position, never say that you were the CEO (or owner) of your company. My resume instead says that that I was a Technology Analyst and Customer Support Specialist at my company.

Hey MD,

This is a good article and all fine points. I think that in the beginning phases the outsourcing can be tough especially when you’re starting with a limited budget such as I am. I totally feel you with the not being artistic part. It’s at those times that before looking to outsource try tapping friends or family. I am not a creative or artistic person but my wife is an interior designer and always willing to help with creative ideas. Overall I thought the article made good points. Thanks.
